From the age of six months babies know what they want but they cannot tell you. When your baby is 1 year old the vocal cords are developed enough to start speaking and it is another year before your baby is ready to attempt complex words and phrases. However, your baby’s motor system is sufficiently developed from 6 months onwards for them to communicate effectively using gestures and movements.
Why do it?
- Research indicates that signing with your baby actually improves language and vocabulary.
- Baby signing enhances speech development.
- Baby signing reduces the frustration felt by both babies and parents.
- IT’S GOOD FUN
In her book Dancing with Words, Signing for Hearing Childrens Literacy, Prof. Daniels writes...
“Using Sign Language & English in tandem provides a much richer language base for brain activity, growth and development.”
